The Trust under Will of John McKee, through the McKee Scholarship Committee, offers scholarships for college or vocational training to high school seniors or graduates who meet all of the following criteria:
(a) not over age 19 years on March 1st;
(b) fatherless boys (i.e., whose biological or adoptive father is actually dead or has been declared missing by a competent authority) of any race; "missing" may also include permanently absent, dysfunctional, and not functioning as a father to the applicant;
(c) in need of financial assistance; and
(d) bona fide resident of the five-county Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia).
Preference is given to those desirous of obtaining a naval education and training.
See the Application page for instructions on how to apply. When the applications and supporting documents are received (due by March 1st), they are reviewed and scored according to cirteria established by the Committee. The highest scoring applicants are then selected to be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee in late April for grants to begin the following fall. See Schedule for more details.
College Scholarships
Scholarships are paid directly to the college or university, never to the individual, for convenience, for a whole year (two or three grading periods, depending on the institution's own plan). Any overpayment and all refunds and rebates (for unreported periods or unused funds) are to be returned to the Trust fund.
Under current policies of the McKee Scholarship Committee, scholarships are awarded in the following amounts (provided the student attends full time, remains in good standing, and files timely reports of all grades received in the course of his studies):
| first year | $3,500 | | second year | $4,500 | | third year | $6,000 | | fourth and final year | $7,500 |
(maximum total of $21,500 as of April 26, 2012). Even though each grant covers two semesters or three trimesters, it is normally advanced as one sum for the year. Adjustments may be made if the Committee decides to increase all scholarships, if the scholar joins the program after entering college or completes college in less than four years, and in similar unusual circumstances.
Vocational Scholarships
The vocational award is $1,000 per year for the life (up to four years) of the originally selected vocational program (under the same conditions as to academic standing and grade reports). As vocational programs vary in time and attendance requirements, total funding is established at the beginning of the program. It also will be paid directly to the school and the same requirement as to one payment and refunds and rebates also applies to vocational grants.
